WTCI Announces Line up of Nostalgic Programming for July

WTCI, the community’s PBS station, will celebrate July with a series of special programs celebrating personalities from television, music and the big screen who helped shape and influence today’s entertainment industry. These programs include features of Groucho Marx, Jimmy Stewart, Jack Benny, Carol Burnett, Jackie Gleason, Lucille Ball, the Rat Pack, Natalie Wood, Bob Newhart, as well as favorites from the worlds of sitcoms, late night television, variety shows, and game shows.

A look back at the unique wit and humor of Groucho Marx. Including candid interview with his colleagues and family. Narrated by David Steinberg, this special includes warm tributes and candid recollections offered by Art Linkletter, Dick Cavett, Jack Lemmon, Marvin Hamlisch and other professional colleagues.

Episode one of this four part series focuses on five key sitcoms: “I Love Lucy,” “The Honeymooners,” “Make Room for Daddy,” “The Andy Griffith Show” and “The Dick Van Dyke Show.” This special includes candid interviews with Joyce Randolph, the last remaining Honeymooner, Marlo Thomas, Andy Griffith, Mary Tyler Moore, and Dick Van Dyke. Hundreds of episodes were collected for the most entertaining clips — including one particularly side-splitting bit by Don Knotts.

JACK BENNY: COMEDY IN BLOOM

A chronological look at the life of Jack Benny, an American entertainer, with interviews from Bob Hope, Dinah Shore, Johnny Carson, Ann Margret, Joan Benny (his daughter), Carol Burnett, Mel Blanc, his writers, his producers and his best friend, George Burns. The program also features funny clips from some of the films he appeared in as well as guest appearances he made on other TV shows with Dick Cavett, Steve Allen, Merv Griffin, David Frost, Giselle McKenzie and Hy Gardner.

BOB NEWHART: UNBUTTONED

Shy and unassuming, Bob Newhart nonetheless exploded on the comedy scene in 1960 with a breakthrough album, The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart. This special features numerous interviews with comics and co-stars who offer telling insight into the long-married father of four (Buddy Hackett introduced Newhart to his wife, Virginia, on a blind date). Stars like Ray Romano, Ellen DeGeneres and David Hyde Pierce have credited Newhart for paving the way for comics to slide effortlessly from stand-up to sitcom.

This special looks at game shows and traces one of broadcasting’s strongest genres - from its beginnings in radio through its heyday in the late 60s. Bob Barker talks about his earliest work, and Merv Griffin details his creation of “Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy.”
